European Vervain (Verbena officinalis)
Family: Vervain (Verbenaceae)
Light blue to white flowered herbaceous perennial. Native to Europe and the Mediterranean and hardy to all zones. The plant tends to make a dense crown that can even become a ground cover in some instances. Eventually gives rise to lithe, fibrous stems that bear the flowers giving way to a studded array of seeds. The herb is used in Western medicine as an astringent, antispasmodic and fever reducing agent. It is also a druidic altar plant, and lends its own protective energy to the garden, the gardener, and the space all around. Best to sow outdoors in very early spring, as the seed requires at least 2 weeks of cold conditioning before it will sprout. Germ in 2 to 4 weeks after that. Sow small seed on surface, barely cover with soil and keep cool and evenly moist until germ.
