Coix lacryma jobi
Ornamental, tufted perennial grass (annual in temperate climate) from Southeast Asia. Excellent in potted culture. The hard seeds are used to make rosaries, or may be lightly toasted and ground for making a salutary tea. The plant grows well outdoors as a summer annual in the temperate north or as a perennial in the tropics--zone 11 and up. We grow it in our greenhouse and it gets about 3 feet high. Its quite pretty and the seeds are a tasty raw chew. Plant prefers full sun, a warm position, and very fast-draining soil coupled with frequent watering. Sow seed 1/2 inch deep and keep evenly moist and warm until germination, which takes 1 to 6 weeks. Individuate to pots or space plants 1 foot apart.
