Evergreen perennial native to the Mediterranean basin and a dominant plant on the island of Crete. May be grown as an annual in areas with colder winters, in which case the plant flowers in the fall. Perennial plants flower in the spring. Low-lying bushes with large, pink flowers, highly aromatic and spicy, used in the culinary arts in the same way as summer savory, winter savory, and thyme (which it somewhat resembles). The valuable essential oil of the herb is pungent and stimulating, and may be diluted in a carrier oil and used as an analgesic and circulation stimulant, making an excellent therapeutic massage oil that allays pain and relaxes. Plant prefers full sun, a dry exposure, and fast-draining soil. Organically grown potted plant
