(Coral Plant, Physic Nut, Miodine)
Family: Spurge (Euphorbiaceae)
Hardiness: Protect from frost.
Tropical woody perennial with milky sap that is used as a flexible and antiseptic bandage. In Africa this plant is known as "Miodine" which literally means "tree of iodine" because of its antiseptic sap. The flowers are extraordinary and the leaf is really unmatched for comeliness. This is one of the prettiest plants I've come across (the photo of the potted plant doesn't do it justice--I just wanted you to be able to see how big are the plants we're selling). Plant prefers full sun and fast-draining soil. Compost and fertilizer not needed. Keep potted up or if you are in zone 8 or up you can probably grow it outdoors as an extremely attractive, drought tolerant, multi-stemmed perennial medicine chest.
This plant may be kept outdoors in a suitable environment, but it is also a great choice for indoor growing as a houseplant. Following, find some recommendations for growing Coral Plant in indoor culture (an indoor windowsill, under a skylight, in a sunroom, but without auxiliary growlights):
Pot size: Quart to Gallon.
Soil and potting up: Coral Plants do best in fast draining soils. Use a standard cactus mix as described here.
Light requirement: Low to high, it'll take what it can get.
Watering requirement: Low (every week so, more often in summer, less often in winter). If light resources are low, water almost never. If more light is available, then more water willbe required, and the plant will grow quickly.
Potential toxicity to pests or young children: do not allow pets or children to have this plant. Although the latex that exudes from any broken part is nontoxic for external use, one does not want to take it internally or get it in the eyes or on mucous membranes. If this should happen, wash thoroughly and bathe in milk to soothe.
Setting outdoors: OK, but protect from frost. These will thrive outdoors in subtropics to tropics and will withstand full sun once established.
Vacations: Probably OK to leave unattended for a month or more. Plant may go dormant and will reawaken and make new leaves once watered.
Other recommendations for growing Coral Plants indoors: These plants will leaf out when happy and drop theri leaves when not happy. If they drop their leaves, discontinue watering and give as much light as possible. Once new leaves form, more water may be given. What a cool plant! A conversation piece on any coffee table, people will fondle it to make sure it is not made of plastic.
