Succulent perennial herb native to Southwestern Africa. Grows to appx 18 inches tall and forms clumps up to a foot wide. Plant prefers full sun to part shade, dryish soils and is hardy to 28 degrees F. Protect from frost! These are plants of verified identity. They make fine indoor pets and may be left in small pots in a light window and thrive on minimal water.
The herb is used by native peoples of the Kalahari during times of famine as a harmless appetite suppressant. The large plants are 5 years old, have 2 or more arms and measure 4-5 inches tall. Kept in the right conditions, they will flower. Potted plant, 2 to 3 inches tall, certified organically grown.
This plant may be grown outdoors in a suitable environment, but unless you live in a frost-free and very dry desert zone, Hoodia is best grown as a houseplant. Following, find some recommendations for growing this plant in indoor culture (an indoor windowsill, under a skylight, or in a sunroom).
Pot size: Pint to Quart. The plant loves root constriction.
Soil: Cactus mix as described in "The Medicinal Herb Grower" by Richo Cech. In short, 50% fast draining ingredients (sand and pumice) mixed with 50% organic compost. Or, purchase "cactus mix" at your local nursery supply store. We do currently offer high grade PUMICE (click), specifically to support people in making their own cactus mix for a substantial savings over buying it at the store.
Light requirement: Low to High.
Watering requirement: Hoodia makes a fantastic trouble-free houseplant as long as it is protected from frost and watered only according to light availability. What we mean by this is if the light is strong and the temperature is high, the plant will appreciate frequent watering (twice a week). If the light is low and the temperature is just room temperature (70 degrees F) then the plant should be watered only once a month.
Fertilization: Not needed.
Toxicity to pests or young children: none, the plant is spiny and self-protective, and its chemistry is nontoxic.
Setting outdoors: OK, but keep warm and protect from frost.
Vacations: Probably OK to leave unattended for 3 months without water.
Other recommendations: The plant will grow slowly in regular indoor culture. If large plants and flowers are desired, then grow lights or a good greenhouse are recommended.
