(Creeping Oregon Grape)
Perennial evergreen creeper native to the forests of the Pacific NW. The plant is highly prized in the shade garden, with shining, compound, holly-like leaves, bearing large clusters of purple berries in the late summer. The roots are a preferred source of the yellow alkaloid berberine, and recent tests have shown that medicines made from both root and aerial parts (ie the whole plant) may demonstrate much higher antibacterial activity than medicines made (traditionally) from the root only. Plant prefers loose, rocky and acid soils of hillsides and stream banks or the rich soil found under conifers.
