Peppermint from seed produces highly variable progeny, so when you find one that you like, it makes sense to propagate by cuttings. This is what we have done in reproducing this lovely "chocolate peppermint" that has chocolate colored leaves and a delightful taste. Does well in pots. Excellent choice for drying and making tea. Chocolate Mint thrives in full sun to shade in moist garden soil. Organically grown potted plant
This plant is often grown outdoors in a suitable environment, but may also be grown indoors as a potted plant. Following, find some recommendations for growing chocolate mint (and for all practical purposes, any mint) in indoor culture (an indoor windowsill, under a skylight, in a sunroom, but without auxiliary growlights):
Pot size: Half gallon to gallon. Does well in shallow pots.
Soil: Standard potting soil mixture for houseplants as fully described on page 107 of "The Medicinal Herb Grower" by Richo Cech, but in short: Mix together 1 gallon of hydrated coir, 1 gallon of compost or composted manure, 2 Tbsp micronutrient mix, 1/2 gallon coarse, sharp sand, 1 gallon pumice.
Light requirement: Low to medium.
Watering requirement: High. does best in an evermoist medium.
Fertilization: Monthly foliar or root feeding of kelp tea, mycoblast, or compost tea.
Potential toxicity to pests or young children: none. These are edible and delicious.
Setting outdoors: OK, but keep moist.
Vacations: Probably OK to leave unattended for a week without water. If necessary, it may help to encase the plant in an inflated plastic bag, in which case it could hold for 2 weeks, more or less.
Other recommendations for growing this plant indoors: Chocolate mint will creep over the soil surface and down the sides of the pot. It may be planted along with other moisture loving herbs such as spilanthes or basil. Mint may grow unhappy in very low light areads--give it a good sunning from time to time to keep it vital!
