Thyme, Creeping (Thymus serphyllum)
Native to Europe. This cultivar will creep and cover bedding areas around perennials, rockwork or other garden features with its admirable lushness. The green herb grows no higher than 3 inches tall, and the lavender/pink flowers blanket the plant in season. For culinary/medicinal purposes, this species is interchangeable with Thymus vulgaris, but somewhat less potent. For decorative purposes, it is hard to improve on this plant.
This plant may be grown outdoors in the perennial herb garden or rockery, but it it is also recommended for indoor growing as a houseplant. Following, find some recommendations for growing Creeping Thyme in indoor culture (an indoor windowsill, under a skylight, in a sunroom, but without auxiliary growlights):
Pot size: Half gallon to gallon. Soil: Standard fast-draining potting soil. Follow this link for potting soil recipes: PUMICE.
Light requirement: High
Watering requirement: Medium. Once every three days or as infrequently as once a week probably fine.
Fertilization: Give a monthly foliar/root feeding of kelp tea, mycoblast, or compost tea.
Potential toxicity to pests or young children: none, this is an edible spice of high repute. However, it may be noted that creeping thyme is not really as aromatic and tasty as these other 2 cultivars, that may reasonably also be grown indoors on a light windowsill: English Broadleaf Thyme, German Winter Thyme.
Setting outdoors: Fine, these are particularly well suited for large pots on the patio or firescape. Creeping thyme covers the soil surface and drapes over the edges of the pot in a very comely manner, and may be potted up along with other, more upright plants (parsley, tulsi, culinary basils) for a multiple plant experience.
Vacations: Probably OK to leave unattended for a week or two without water. It will want a drink when you get home.
Other recommendations for growing this plant indoors: These will spread and flower most abundantly when given sufficient light, so setting out on the sunny doorstep or placing the plant in an open sunny window on hot days will really bolster its life force.
