Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri)
Creeping, succulent herb native to India. In Ayurveda, this herb is used to sharpen the mind and stimulate the memory. Does well in pots. The plant prefers moist, fertile soil and does not require good drainage. Partial shade and humid air are helpful, but the plant will also survive in full sun at the edge of a pond or stream. It is also possible to grow brahmi indoors in an aquarium. They thrive in the greenhouse. The plant is dark green, with a thick stem and small leaves, flowering light lavender. We offer thoroughly rooted potted plants. * With good horticultural technique, each pot can be divided and increased for the purpose of producing voluminous quantities of the herb.
Delivery starts April 1, 2015
This plant may be grown outdoors in a suitable environment, but it is also recommended for indoor growing as a houseplant. Following, find some recommendations for growing this plant in indoor culture (an indoor windowsill, under a skylight, in a sunroom, but without auxiliary growlights):
Pot size: Quart to half gallon. Does well in shallow pots.
Soil: Standard potting soil mixture for houseplants as described on page 107 of "The Medicinal Herb Grower" by Richo Cech: Mix together 1 gallon of hydrated coir, 1 gallon of compost or composted manure, 2 Tbsp micronutrient mix, 1/2 gallon coarse, sharp sand, 1 gallon pumice.
Light requirement: Medium
Watering requirement: Frequent
Fertilization: Weekly foliar or root feeding of kelp tea, mycoblast, or compost tea.
Potential toxicity to pests or young children: none
Setting outdoors: OK, but protect from frost and keep shaded.
Vacations: Probably OK to leave unattended for 5 days without water. If necessary, it may help to encase the plant in an inflated plastic bag, in which case it could hold for 2 weeks, more or less.
Other recommendations for growing this plant indoors: These do well in a high humidity area and are a good choice for terrariums. They can even be floated in a fishtank for a short time with good results. They drape over the edge of the pot and make pretty lavender flowers when they are very happy. Propagate by stem cutting.
