Blue Cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides)
Herbaceous perennial native to Appalachia. Blue cohosh is a shy forest dweller that prefers full shade and moist, fertile soils. The plants are very spring-oriented (almost ephemeral), producing unusual flowers on awakening in the spring and maintaining the flowers, and eventually large blue berries, on the crown of the plant as it rises up and matures through the summer. The leaves are compound, blue-green and three-lobed, delicate and very pretty. Very long-lived in the right situation, blue cohosh is individualistic (individuals will vary in size, shape, appearance, florific habit, quantity of fruit, etc) and can be an extraordinary focus at trailside or in the shade garden. Our potted blue cohosh are organic, nursery-propagated and at least three years old. Under the right situation they will make show plants within 1 or 2 years of transplant.
