Sage, White (Salvia apiana)
White sage prefers sandy soil in the full sun, and it is not very frost hardy, so those living in cold winter areas are advised to grow it as an annual or in a pot (which can be brought indoors for the winter). For indoor growing of white sage, choose your sunniest window (or a greenhouse), water sparingly and use a potting soil consisting of 50% of a mixture of coarse sharp sand and pumice and 50% organic compost. Other potting soils of course will work OK but this one would be ideal. In any case, fast drainage is important. Our robust plants are grown from seed and are in deep pots. Dried white sage leaf is excellent for smudging, purification and prayer. We encourage all to grow these special plants.
