(Aloe Vera) Perennial succulent.  Protect from frost.  This is the most common of Aloes worldwide, has been traded since antiquity and the original wild stands (probably once located in North Africa)  have been lost in the shuffle. Easy to grow, prospering in the gentle light from almost any window, the plant waiting patiently for someone to need the cooling and emollient gel which may be squeezed from its leaf.  This is used for cooling burns, treating sunburn and chapped skin, and may be taken internally where the mucilage soothes the digestive tract, reduces pain of ulcer, and speeds healing.

Perennial succulent native to mid elevations of Texas, New Mexico and Mexico.  The plant makes a bold rosette of spiny-tipped, fat, leathery and succulent leaves, giving occasional rise to the 12 foot flowering spike garlanded with reddish-yellow flowers hardy to -5 degrees F.  Agave produces a sweet juice that can be concentrated into a superior sweetener, fermented to make an alcoholic beverage.

(Bai-guo, Maidenhair Tree)  Perennial, deciduous, dioecious tree native to eastern China. Darwin called it a “living fossil.” The trees are resilient, adaptable to the inner city or the farm, and they are perfectly cold hardy. They are also exceedingly beautiful, with lithe, humanoid trunks and deeply grooved, bi-lobed leaves. The leaves filter toxins out of the air.

Looks like a cactus, actually is a milkweed.  Satisfyingly unusual plant makes a fine indoor pet and may be left in small pots in a light window, thriving on minimal water.  The herb is used by native peoples of the Kalahari during times of famine as a harmless appetite suppressant. Potted plant, 2 to 3 inches tall, nice ones!
