Tomato, House (Lycopersicon esculentum), packet of 10 seeds, organic

Miniature house tomato prefers to grow in pots in a bright window and produces fruits in 75 days.  These are easy to grow, super cute, and actually do produce a rather nice tomato for in or off season enjoyment.  The tomatoes are like tiny slicers, orange-red at maturity.

Tomato, Indigo Rose (Lycopersicon esculentum), packet of 30 seeds, organic
Tomato, Indigo Rose (Lycopersicon esculentum), packet of 30 seeds, organic

91 days to fruits.  New open pollinated and non-gmo tomato is nearly round, hard until fully ripe, and is high in the antioxidant known as anthocyanin. Astoundingly, the fruits are colored a very dark blue-black (the "indigo" part of their name).  Upon ripening, the globular tomatoes turn soft and the green bottom turns orange-red (the "rose" part of their name).   We like these in mixed salds, where the firm texture and fruity, almost zingy taste do much to enliven lettuce.

Tomato, Purple Calabash (Lycopersicon esculentum), packet of 30 seeds, organic

(Purple Calabash Tomato) 70 days to fruits.  We grew this tomato in response to seeder's requests for "Heirloom Tomatoes."  We found the bushes to be large, indeterminate, drought resistant, and prolifically studded with the dark, sweet, small to mid-sized, convoluted fruits.  Consistent with the genre, these heirloom tomatoes are very delicate and difficult to get to market without bruising--best used vine to table, where they will be injoyed by all who want a low acid, sweet and handsome 'mater.

Watermelon, Egusi (Citrullus colocynthis), packet of 10 seeds, organic
Watermelon, Egusi (Citrullus colocynthis), packet of 10 seeds, organic

Annual vine native to West Africa.  90 days.   Bearing small. roud to oblong fruits ranging in weight from 5 to 10 lbs, Egusi is filled with a bitter flesh but loaded with highly nutritious seeds.  Seed coat is not eaten, only the insides, very much like a sunflower seed, only bigger.  We planted this in a narrow space between a bed of astragalus and a bed of tomatoes, and found that the vines ran out and made fruits up to 40 feet away from the crown of the plant.  The seeds (endosperm, without the testa) contain 50% protein and 30% fat, making them an excellent food source.  Seeds used in a variety of ways--ground up and added to soup as a delicious thickener, roasted and eaten stright, soaked, fermented, boiled, ground up and fried as cakes, made into a butter, ground up and added to water to make an infant formula.
