Herbaceous perennial.  Native to Europe and temperate Asia.  Hardy to -20 degrees F.  Probably the strongest herbal cerebral sedative, the plant makes one go to sleep.  Valerian flowers in the early summer, and the aroma of the heady white honeyed flowers drifts enticingly through the warm air of sweet afternoon.  It is enough to give the bees a buzz, and sometimes one finds them there, in the morning, inside their little valeriana hammock, inebriated to the point of inaction.  zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
