Seeds are highly toxic if taken internally. This toxicity has actually been harnessed historically and in modern times, as a strong decoction of the seed is used for bathing the hair during lice infestation--this kills head lice and nits. To grow larkspur, which was once common in every cottage garden, you strew the seeds on a fertile bed in the fall or very early spring, and the plants come up voluntarily in the spring. They don't like pots, nor do they like tidy rows, preferring instead to grow in delightful blue-flowered patches (our kind is blue). They like the full sun.
