Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia) seeds
Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia) seeds:

Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia)
Family:Bignoniacea
Hardiness:  30 degrees F
Deciduous tree native to Argentina and Bolivia, growing to about 50 feet tall and equally as wide.  Blue-purple trumpeting flowers occur during the spring, literally lighting up the trees.  Excellent choice for a street or yard tree in sufficiently warm zones, I hold a lifelong memory of walking down Jacaranda street in Nairobi while the display was ON!  The leaves are used in traditional south American herbalism to make an antibacterial wash.  Plant prefers hot, sunny, and humid weather, growing best in fertile, well-drained soil.  Nick seed, soak overnight, and plant warm.  Germ in 1 to 2 weeks.  10 seeds/pkt $2.95

Jequirity seeds
Jequirity seeds:

Jequirity (Abrus precatorius )
(Rosary Pea, Cock's Eye, Gunja, Gunchi, Rati, Mkanga uchawi)
Family: Pea (Fabaceae)
Hardiness:  Protect from frost.  Good in pots.
Perennial tropical vine native all through the plains of India and into Ceylon, East Africa, also Florida. The leaves are heated and used in poulticing. The seed contains a toxalbumin known as "abrin" that is toxic when ground up and applied to wounds (so don't do that) but thought to be rendered harmless by boiling. Historically, the powdered seeds boiled in milk were considered a powerful tonic and aphrodisiac. Fascinating vine with flowers of purple. New harvest seed from  Zanzibar, very fertile.  Scarify and sow very warm.  Plant is fine with full sun and fast-draining soil.
Open Pollinated 20 seeds/pkt.

Jerusalem Cherry (Solanum pseudocapsicum) seeds, organic
Jerusalem Cherry (Solanum pseudocapsicum) seeds, organic:

Jerusalem Cherry (Solanum pseudocapsicum) (Shan-hu-yin) seed
Hardiness:  to 20 degrees F
Erect evergreen perennial subshrub native to South America.  The cold-hardiness is a definite plus!  It withstands some pretty cold weather and still looks great!  Very pretty plant, quite miniature in nature, especially suited for low bedding plant applications or container culture with flowers of white or mauve giving way to the conspicuous, rounded, bright red fruits.  Plant prefers full sun to light shade, regular garden soil, and for all intents and purposes may be propagated by seed as per tomatoes.  30 seeds per packet for $2.95, organic

Note:  In keeping with our policy of offeing more seed when the harvest is good, we're increasing the seeds per packet from 20 to 30.  We had a great year on these.  Its also an organic conversion, ie we grew out the original seed (collected by Richo in 2007 in SW China) and then produced this fat, viable, organically certified seed here on our farm.  Excellent!

Jewelweed, Orange (Impatiens capensis) seeds, organic
Jewelweed, Orange (Impatiens capensis) seeds, organic:

Jewelweed, Orange (Impatiens capensis)
(Touch-me-not, Orange Jewelweed)
Family:  Touch Me Not (Balsaminaceae)
Annual, native to central and eastern US.  The flowers are orchid-like, spurred and orange. Fresh plant, when rolled and worried until it exudes juice, dissolves poison-oak oils (urushiol) on the skin and also helps treat poison oak rash, helping heal the skin and relieve itching. I find that the seed is best planted in cold soils of fall or spring and grows rapidly once it germinates.
Organically grown 20 seeds/pkt.

Job's Tears, Tropical (Coix lacryma-jobi) seeds, organic
Job's Tears, Tropical (Coix lacryma-jobi) seeds, organic:
Coix lacryma jobi
Ornamental, tufted perennial grass (annual in temperate climate) from Southeast Asia. The hard seeds are used to make rosaries and are lightly toasted and ground for making a salutary tea.
The plant grows well in the tropics--zone 11 and up. We grow it in our greenhouse and it gets about 3 feet high.  Its quite pretty and the seeds are a tasty chew, even raw--it can be grown as an annual in the hot and humid greenhouse--probably not outdoors in the temperate north.

Job's Tears, Wild (Onosmodium virginianum) seeds, organic
Job's Tears, Wild (Onosmodium virginianum) seeds, organic:

Onosmodium virginianum  (Virginia Marbleseed)
Herbaceous perennial. Native to the Gulf States and on up the Atlantic seabord to southern New England. Occurrences are few and mainly in protected sites--Wild Job's Tears is as scarce as a hen's tooth in the country. After over a decade of work with this plant, we have established a fine stand, and the new harvest is much more abundant than ever before, so we have upped the seeds per packet to a more generous (20) as opposed to the old packet count (5). No price increase. The plant is hairy, with light yellow, tubular flowers arranged in scorpioid inflorescences, with projecting stamens. The straight herbal use is as a strong diuretic and tonic, and the homeopathic indications are: "Want of power of concentration and coordination; migraine; sexual dysfunctions in males; uterine pain and lack of sexual desire in females." Plant prefers full sun and dryish, sandy soil but humid atmospheric conditions. Sow seed in fall for germination in the spring. 1 to 3 feet tall.
20 seeds/pkt organically grown
"We have in Onosmodium a remedy with some peculiarities, and occupying a sphere unique, a curative range differing from that of every other drug."
Dr. William A. Yingling, homeopath, 1893

Fall 2009 harvest of these gave exceptional quality--a good year to plant this disappearing relic of early herbal medicine.  Richo

Juniper (Juniperus communis) seeds
Juniper (Juniperus communis) seeds:
Juniperus communis
The dried berries of this, the official species, are one of the best urinary disinfectants known to herbalist. We have found that a formula containing 10% juniper berries or the extract therof, along with soothing herbs such as mullein, marshmallow and goldenrod, quickly dispels beginning phase urinary infection. This is a low-dose botanical, and overdosage can cause renal irritation. Not to be used during pregnancy. Plant prefers full sun and dryland conditions, but of course will grow much faster if given some water, and will certainly need some watering to get established.  Sow the seeds in outdoor nursery bed or shaded flats, preferably in the fall.  We normally see limited germination within a few months, then a flush of germination in the spring.  Very nice seed.
Open Pollinated 100 seeds/pkt.

Kaladana (Ipomoea hederacea) seeds
Kaladana (Ipomoea hederacea) seeds:
Kaladana (Ipomoea hederacea) (Pharbitis hederacea) (Lobeleaf Morning Glory, Ivy leaved morning glory) seed
Family:  Convulvacea
As an annual, flowers within 60 days.  Possibly perennial in Zone 9.
Native to China.  Flowers colored as per the picture (I'm not very good at describing flower colors.  Flowers are all nasal sensory for me and the interesting parts are the sex glands, mostly, not so much the color.  I even like white flowers, and black ones.) Seeds are the source of  a resin that is used interchangeably with the classic herbal drug jalap, both being active cathartics.  (Invent a drug that makes people poop better and they will beat a track to your door, or perhaps to the nearest toilet, whichever is nearer I guess.)  The plant is an aggresive vine that prefers part to full sun and rich soil.  Trellis. Our tests show this seed to be among the fastest of germinators. Nick through seedcoat, using anything sharp and handy, soak seed overnight and then plant in a warm, sunny spot, in the greenhouse or under lights.  Germination sometimes as fast as 3 days.  Plants dislike root disturbance, so sowing directly into beds in the spring is a very nice trick.  20 seeds/pkt $2.95

Kale, Chinese Dark Green (Brassica oleracea var. alboglabra) seed:

Kale, Chinese Dark Green (Brassica oleracea var. alboglabra)
(Kailaan, Chinese Broccoli)
Annual.  If sown in the spring, the plant matures in 50 days.  If sown in the fall, the plant matures in 70 days.  If sown in the spring, the plant will resprout and come again for several more cuttings and harvests, a very worthy feature.  This is an easy to grow source of fat, tender stems crowned by dark green leaves, used in salads or for cooking.  Makes an awesome stir-fry.  Excellent when boiled, heaped on a plate, and drizzled with olive oil, garlic, lemon and herbs.  Oh my goodness, is it yummy.  Consumption of dark green leafy vegetables is the key to keeping healthy.  If you make a large mixed salad daily, and use raw garlic in the dressing, I personally guarantee that you will get sick less often, and have a lesser likelihood of getting cancer.  Trust me, I'm a body advocate, and I'm pretty sure you have one of those (a body, that is,not an advocate, well maybe an advocate) if you are reading this.  Anyhow, this particular plant is very giving, as new stems and leafy crowns will come again after the first cut, and again after the second cut, unless extreme weather intervenes.  Sow spring or fall.  Easy.  200 seeds/pkt

Kanna (Scletium tortuosum) seed
Kanna (Scletium tortuosum) seed:
Kanna (Scletium tortuosum)
(Kougoed)
Family:  Aizoaceae
Perennial succulent shrub native to S. Africa, hardy to about 20 degrees F.  Rare.  Source of the alkaloid mesembrine, which is a seratonin reuptake inhibitor, an herbal antidepressant if you will.  Scletium flower sporadically year-round, most heavily in late winter and early spring.  They are self-seeding.  Culture is much the same as for Cacti--surface sow on gritty soil, keeping warm and damp and in the light until germination.  Typical Cactus mix is 50% white pumice, 25% coarse, sharp sand, and 25% organic matter such as coir or compost.  Many growers use gallon pots and stretch plastic over the top of the pot to create a mini-greenhouse effect.  When seedlings emerge, prop them up with bits of pumice to help them stay positioned and root in.  Do not dislodge when watering.  Slowly acclimatize plants to full sun and drier soil.  Plants prefer full sun, with moisture and fertility in summer and kept dry in winter.  20 seeds/pkt open pollinated

Kowhai Tree (Sophora microphylla) seeds
Kowhai Tree (Sophora microphylla) seeds:
Sophora microphylla
This small tree is native to New Zealand, bearing golden yellow flowers on its ferny, drooping branches. A rewarding addition to the landscape, the tree prefers partial shade to full sun and copious rainfall. Probably best suited for coastal and southern US. All parts of the tree are employed in native herbal medicine, where careful preparation renders toxic alkaloids harmless. Used externally against cuts, bruises and swellings. Lightly scarify the pea-sized seeds, then drop in hot water, allow to cool and soak overnight, then plant in warm, rich soil.

Ku-shen (Sophora flavescens) seed:
Ku-shen (Sophora flavescens) seed
(Syn. Sophora angustifolia)
Family:  Pea (Fabaceae)
Hardiness: -30 degrees F
Evergreen perennial shrub to 5 feet, native to China and Japan.  The dried root of this handsome, nitrogen-fixing subshrub is one of the Chinese herbs that clears heat, having a bitter and cold nature, used for jaundice, diarrhea, vaginal discharge and sores.  It is a relatively important herb in the Chinese materia medica.  The plant itself does well in the same habitat as Sea Buckthorn (Hippophaea rhamnoides), with an ability to improve poor soil and stabilize loose, sloping ground.  Relatively cold-hardy broadleaf evergreens brighten the dreary drears of winter.  Plant prefers full sun and is not picky about soil.  Scarify and soak seed overnight and sow fall to early spring.  Work up seedlings in pots until they are big enough to withstand the rigors of planting outdoors.  50 (large) seeds/pkt
