"Three's Company" Houseplant Collection, 3 potted plants, Organic:

Folks frequently request a medicinal plant that will do well "indoors" by which they generally mean on a windowsill inside the house.  Well, here we have compiled three plants that do very well indeed in just these conditions, and we propose to send them to you, or to your chosen recipient, as a threesome.  These can be potted up to quart size pots and will thrive even when you are gone on vacation and cannot water them.  They are:

Bowiea (Bowiea volubilis)
Life Plant (Bryophyllum pinnatum)
Cape Aloe (Aloe ferox)

Certified organic potted plants

Artemisia seed set--6 packets consisting of A. annua; Mugwort, common; Mugwort, Western; Sagebrush; Wormwood, Absinthe and Wormwood, Redstem (Not available to SD and WA)
Artemisia seed set--6 packets consisting of A. annua; Mugwort, common; Mugwort, Western; Sagebrush; Wormwood, Absinthe and Wormwood, Redstem (Not available to SD and WA):
ARTEMISIA SEED SET
Family: Asteraceae
Loved by many for their beauty and utility, maligned by some, the Artemisias always seem to get a reaction.  Reasonable dosage, employed to ameliorate conditions as appropriate, is often helpful.   Excessive dosage is potentially toxic.  Similar to the thin line between genious and insanity, so is it sometimes with the thin line between efficacy and overdose.  Artemisias prefer full sun and dryish soils.  They are light-dependent germinators.  Mix very tiny seed with sand before sprinkling on surface and tamping in, so the seedlings do not overcrowd.  Keep evenly moist until germination.  These plants will require reasonable water to get established, and once established are drought-tolerant and allelopathic.  6 packets consisting of A. annua; Mugwort, Common (A. vulgaris); Mugwort, Western (A. ludoviciana); Sagebrush (A. tridentata) ; Wormwood, Absinthe (A. absinthium); Wormwood, Redstem (A. scoparia).  (Not available to SD and WA)

Culinary Basil Set (Genovese, Greek, Sweet and Thai)
Culinary Basil Set (Genovese, Greek, Sweet and Thai):

Family: Lamiaceae
Culinary Basils coming from Africa, the Mediterranean and the Orient.  These are excellent in soup, stir-fry, in Asian cookery, and then make incomperable PESTO.    Basils prefer full sun, rich soil, and plenty of water.  They give fast results, with first harvest at 70 days.  Sow in early spring indoors or in the greenhouse for an early start, or sow directly in the spring or summer garden.  Thin or transplant to 1 to 2 feet apart.  Average germ time 6 days.

4 pkts, organic  (Price shown is a discount.)

Further ruminations on Basil:  Basils fall loosely into 2 categories:  culinary and tea.  Holy basil, also known as tulsi, is clearly of the tea basil type (actually tulsi is not in this basil set--it is its own separate little 3 packet set, which see here http://www.horizonherbs.com/product.asp?specific=jposdsc8).  We have recently also developed a collection of African tea basils which you can see here http://www.horizonherbs.com/product.asp?specific=2533  These are used in indigenous culture as healing herbs for treating diverse maladies (including depression), and also for burnt offerings and smudge.  Culinary basils, such as Genovese (which is pretty much the pinnacle), Greek (which has the most concentrated true basil aroma), and ranging through the famously turgid "lettuce leaf" and ending up out on the edge with Thai, which has a spicy taste and very attractive shape and color to foliage, well, they all have their own attractions, especially on the dinner plate I might add to this rediculously long sentence.

DVD "ADVENTURES IN ZANZIBAR":

If you order a DVD only you can choose combination or custom shipping. We can ship your DVD using Media mail (US shipments only). This will cut your shipping charges in half, slower shipping time (up to 2 weeks).

This is a live lecture (PLANETARY HERBS, SANTA CRUZ, 2010) augmented by video and still shots of Zanzibar.  Richo at his best--very entertaining.

"The apprentices immediately bent down to harvest some seeds from this plant which they understood was entirely new to me.  After all, hadn't the strange white mganga just asked Salimbum to show him the plant for the first time?  As they busied themselves, I secretly reached into my back pocket and removed three cleaned seeds from the very plant they were working on, palmed them, and with an exclamation that sounded sort of like "THWAP!" I flourished the seeds in my open palm above the plant, as if I'd just manifested them, drawing them up out of the plant, or created them spontaneously from antimatter.  The apprentices drew back with fear in their eyes..."

Produced by HERB TV, this is a substantial upgrade over previous videos of Richo's world.  One part herbal travelogue, one part stories, a lot of african botanizing, some standup comedy and a dash of spirituality.

(1 hour and 45 minutes, runs in standard DVD player or computer)

Four Sisters Seed Collection: 1 pkt each of Bean, Scarlet Empress; Corn, Anasazi Sweet; Squash, Yellow Crookneck; Sunflower, Fat Mama. All organic
Four Sisters Seed Collection: 1 pkt each of Bean, Scarlet Empress; Corn, Anasazi Sweet; Squash, Yellow Crookneck; Sunflower, Fat Mama. All organic:

In honor of the first nations peoples and the crops they grew, we offer these seeds.  The Anasazi sweet corn came originally from a sealed pot of corn found in a cave, and the yellow crooknecks were selected and developed by the eastern tribes.  We plant the corn in rows and plant the beans under the corn so they can climb up.  We plant the squash in hills nearby.  We plant the sunflowers at the back because they tower and we don't want them to block the sun to the corn.  But these crops can be planted many ways, and they are full of original energy, and they taste good when you eat them.  Wholesome.  Give thanks to the original inhabitants of this land.  Their way was a good way.

Four Sisters Seed Collection:  1 full size pkt each of Bean, Scarlet Empress; Corn, Anasazi Sweet; Squash, Yellow Crookneck; Sunflower, Fat Mama.  All organic

Lifeline Medicinal Herb Garden, (18 seed packets), organic
Lifeline Medicinal Herb Garden, (18 seed packets), organic:

Pretty regularly gardening friends tell us that they are a bit overwhelmed by our catalogue and the hundreds of choices of rare, common, aromatic, smelly, ponderous, piddly, floriferous, leafy, weedy, picky, poisonous, nutritious, sour, sweet, bitter, toothsome, fruity, barren, hard, soft, stemmy, creeping, rooty, viny, night-blooming, day-blooming and just blooming CONFUSING medicinal herb seeds and plants that we offer. One evening Mayche and I were taking a stroll in the gardens. I took her elbow and guided her between the evening primroses with their yellow, mucilaginous blooms and the burdock, with its velcroed seedheads ready to burst into genetic infinity. A dragonfly swooped by, while a striped pheonix moth unfolded its inch-long proboscis into a waiting garden sage flower. In the sky, an amorphous white cloud was illuminated from behind by the setting sun, superimposed against the darkening blue of the heavens. Inspired by this tiny set of events, or perchance listening subliminally to the chattering of the plants themselves, we began to discuss putting together a set of herb seeds that would embody the foundation for a diverse medicinal garden that would contribute to every aspect of health and well-being, and making this set of seeds available to people at a very low cost, so that more would find it possible to buy them and realize the benefits. That way, our gardening friends wouldn’t have to choose. We would choose for them. “Let’s call it the LIFELINE garden,” said Mayche. “Its like throwing people a lifeline to bring them back to health.” “I like it,” I said. Then Mayche (ever the shopper) said, “And, its like lifeline pricing at the co-op, where they sell organically grown stuff like brown rice, potatoes, and dried beans for just over cost, to make sure that everybody has enough to eat. “OK,” I said. So here it is, folks, the LIFELINE medicinal herb garden. 100% USDA certified organic seeds from our garden to yours. You can’t find them fresher. I even had to harvest and winnow the yarrow while Mayche waited, in order to construct the first set.
There are 18 packets in all, packed in earth-friendly recycled paper and cellophane, under our colorful sprouting herbseeds logo: Astragalus, Holy Basil (Rama Tulsi), Gobo Burdock, Mixed Calendula, German Chamomile, Echinacea purpurea, Elecampane, Evening Primrose, Brown Flax, Lemon Balm, Marshmallow, Official Motherwort, Stinging Nettles, Cayenne Pepper, Garden Sage, Official Valerian, Wood Betony and Yarrow. Available to you barely over our cost. And, you don’t have to choose.

Herbs from the Cauldron

Throughout the ages we have engaged in a difficult and sometimes violent effort to differentiate malevolent magic from altruistic magic. Clearly, those herbs which through carelessness can kill, can in the practiced hands of a true healer ease pain and banish suffering. These seeds are offered to serious historical gardeners to assist in their efforts to assure that the plants representing such dichotomous potential be forever preserved, in the darkling garden and in our deepest imaginations. The Old-World collection includes individual packets of: Aconite, Monkshood (Wolfbane) (Aconitum napellus), Belladonna (Atropa belladonna), Datura, Jimson Weed  (Datura stramonium), Henbane (Hyoscyamous niger),  Mandrake (Mandragora autumnalis) and Poppy, Zahir (Papaver somniferum).
Note for California and Washington residents: Scopalia will be substituted for Henbane.

Soap, Neem Oil
Soap, Neem Oil:

Neem Oil Soap

"Gentle Yet Potent"

"Good for bathing mice, but never tested on bunnies!"

Have you ever had a bar of soap last so long that you had time to develop a personal relationship with it?  Well, that's how we felt with our sample bar of neem oil soap, as it sudzed us multiple times, there in the bathtub, with the light of a single bulb streaming in through the window from the cat porch, cutting through the darkness in just the same way as the soap cut through the dirt on our garden soiled bodies.  Formulated by Richo and handmade by Bunny's Bath, the neem oil soap bar has proven its excellence, and we are excited to share it with you (not the one we already used, for goodness sakes, we have lots of them in stock now, and we will send you a new one!)  The soap emits a gentle fragrance of circulation-stimulating essential oil of rosemary.  It is further preserved with a water extract of rosemary.  The base oil is organic sunflower seed oil, and the active ingredient is neem oil, introduced at just the right dosage, and by a special unpatented and entirely secret process the neem is added in such a way that it is not saponified and therefore delivers its potency in an unchanged state. An excellent antifungal soap for whole body and hair use.   Literally erases athlete's foot.  Get yourself hot and wet, lather up, allow the soap to work on affected areas for 3 minutes, then rinse with clear hot water and follow up with cold water.  Pat dry.  An excellent shampoo soap for ridding the hair of lice and nits (neem is a potent antiparasitic).  An excellent shampoo bar for dogs and cats.  Neem kills fleas.  In every case, wet the hair/fur with warm water, lather up richly, then let sit for at least 3 minutes, then rinse with warm water.  Wash those fleas right out of your life, and send them on their way!!  We've been designing and living on the edge of manufacturing this soap for about a decade, and we've finally done it.  And, we've priced this large and sturdy bar for quick sales and happy customers.  Enjoy!  5 oz bar
