Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) root, dried, entire, organic:
Highly respected rejuvenative tonic from the Ayurvedic tradition. (For in-depth coverage of the positive effects of Ashwagandha, see the book "Rasayana" by Puri.) What we have here are entire dried roots from the 2009 harvest, weighing in at around 2 ounces each, and the quality is excellent. The woody root can be set on a shelf in the bedroom as a totem, or snipped into pieces and slowly chewed, or snipped into pieces and ground into powder. Snip into small pieces with heavy shears and grind in the blender or in a coffee grinder (the kind with the small whirring blades), then run the powder through a sieve to remove the woody pieces. In Ayurvedic practice, taking about 1 g of Ashwagandha root powder daily is known to improve overall immunity, increase sexual stamina, and promote heavy and rejuvenating sleep. In India, the herb is commonly prescribed for bolstering malnourished children, to stabilize the fetus and empower the woman during pregnancy, for improving the sexual prowess of both men and women, for treating adrenal exhaustion, and in general for bolstering any run-down condition.
One root weighing at least 2 ounces, certified organically grown. We sell these in the whole form because some people prefer to use them as totems (they are person-like in appearance) and also because as with many herbs, the potency is best preserved in the whole form, and the powder is strongest from recently ground up herbs. So grinding your own makes sense. These are bushy and will have to be shipped priority mail (choose "things" at checkout)

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) "Manjano", dried and powdered, 50g packet:
Turmeric powder, 50g packet
This is an excellent quality rhizome of Curcuma longa known in Swahili as "Manjano." The Swahili word "Manjano" actually translates as "yellow." My friend Myriami of Pemba (who knows alot about traditional Swahili cooking) attests to the quality of this material, as it is pure and unadulterated, and its smell is quite penetrating. In fact, on my recent trip to the zanzibar archipelago the entire bus gave off the deep aroma of turmeric as I travelled with it in gunny sacks from Wete through Chake to the southern port of the island where I embarked by the tramp steamer Maendeleo (maendeleo means "progress" in Swahili, which this steamer was NOT a good example of) on my way back to the States (a 2 days + trip). The roots are grown on a great diverse herb farm PEMBASPICE in PEMBA, where intercropping and a high level of diversity help make a small spice farm extremely productive, and their spices particularly nice. They are not certified organic but they don't use any chemicals at all, and having been there myself to check out their facility, I could see for myself that they used only organic techniques and no chemicals of any kind. A truly righteous outfit. The roots are dug, dried whole, then ground to a fine yellow powder. 50 g packet/$4.50
